He is not a super model. Or at least He wasn't. For there was no beauty in Him that we should desire Him. The Transfiguration doesn't speak of beauty but of glory. So I suspect this is still true, even after the Resurrection, Jesus is not beautiful to the lusting eyes of men. But He is a role model. He does everything that we should. He prays. He assists the needy. He turns the other cheek. He keeps the Law. We should follow His example in every way as is often noted in the historic Collects and in many places in the Scriptures. That is not to say that following Jesus moral example will make us His children. That is a false and misleading dream. For even if we did keep the Law perfectly God would still owe us nothing. We are supposed to keep the Law. It is not as though we can march into the courthouse and demand a reward because we didn't speed. It is the same with God's Law. Even if it is kept it cannot save. The keeping of the Law is its own reward. It is the best and most fulfilling way to live and to die. We are saved by following Jesus' spiritual example. He lived by faith. He placed His life in His Father's hand. He trusted in and waited for the resurrection. We have been baptized into this hope and life. When Jesus says: "Follow Me." He means it. He is the best and greatest role model for all men. |
